Coaching for Courage: Finding the Bravery to Begin

What Courage Really Is

Most of us picture courage as something dramatic — leaping, daring, charging forward without fear. But the kind of courage that changes a life is usually much quieter. It is sending the email you have been avoiding. It is saying "I need help" out loud. It is starting something when you have no guarantee it will work. In coaching, we learn that courage is not the absence of fear; it is the decision that what you want matters more than what you are afraid of.

Why Courage Shrinks When We Need It Most

Here is the paradox: the moments that most require courage are exactly when it feels hardest to reach. Big changes — a career move, an honest conversation, a new beginning — come with uncertainty, and uncertainty triggers our oldest instinct: stay safe, stay still, stay small. We tell ourselves we need more confidence before we act, but confidence rarely comes first. In my work with clients, I have watched again and again how courage comes first and confidence follows. You act bravely, and then you discover you can.

The Myth of Being Ready

So many people wait. They wait to feel ready, to have a perfect plan, to know it will work out. But readiness is a mirage — it keeps moving just ahead of you. One of the most freeing things coaching offers is permission to begin before you are ready. A brave first step does not have to be a big one. It can be as small as writing down what you really want, telling one trusted person your dream, or blocking thirty minutes on your calendar to start. Small courage counts. In fact, small courage is how big courage is built.

Borrowing Bravery on the Hard Days

On days when your own courage feels thin, borrow some. Think of someone you admire — not because they are fearless, but because they acted despite their fear. Remember a time you did something hard and survived it, maybe even grew from it. Courage has a memory; remind yourself of your own track record. And if you can, tell someone what you are about to do. Naming your brave step out loud makes it real, and being witnessed makes it easier to follow through.

Courage Is a Practice, Not a Personality Trait

Courage is not something you either have or you do not. It is a muscle, strengthened each time you choose the braver path. Every time you speak up, try again, or begin something new, the next brave step gets a little easier. You do not need to be fearless. You just need to be willing — willing to take one honest step toward the life you want, even with shaky knees.

If fear has been keeping you on the sidelines, you do not have to push through it alone. Coaching with Lucia at WellbeingABC is a warm, steady space to name what you want — and find the courage to begin. This week, take one small brave step. Future you will be glad you did.
